Franklin is the Williamson County seat, about thirty minutes down I-65 from downtown Nashville, and its houses tell the story of the town in order. Around Main Street and the Carter House, Victorian and early twentieth-century homes stand on narrow lots a short walk from the square. Fieldstone Farms and the neighborhoods off Hillsboro Road came in the 1990s, McKay's Mill and Sullivan Farms in the 2000s, Westhaven grew west of town as a planned community with its own golf course and town center, and Berry Farms, Lockwood Glen and Ladd Park along the Harpeth River are the newest chapters.

Each era asks for something different. A historic house needs cabinetry that fits old rooms and honors existing trim. A 1990s house needs a kitchen and primary bath brought forward. A newer Westhaven or Berry Farms house needs the pantry, closets, mudroom and office the floor plan drew but the builder finished with shelving and paint.

What do Franklin homeowners usually ask us for?

In the historic district and on the older streets around it, the request is a kitchen that belongs to the house. That means inset cabinet doors, beaded face frames, a freestanding-looking hutch or pantry piece, painted or stained finishes chosen against heart-pine floors and tall baseboards, and hardware that does not look like it came from a subdivision. Ceilings are high and rooms are narrow, so we draw cabinetry that is tall rather than deep and keep circulation clear.

In Fieldstone Farms, McKay's Mill and Sullivan Farms, owners are replacing kitchens and primary baths from the 1990s and 2000s, usually removing a raised bar, adding a flat island and turning a corner pantry into a real one. In Westhaven, Berry Farms, Lockwood Glen and Ladd Park, the houses are newer and the work is about finishing: walk-in closets with drawers, a pantry with counter space, a mudroom with lockers, a home office and a media wall for the family room.

What is different about working on a home in Franklin?

Franklin reviews exterior changes to houses in its historic district, so an addition to an older house takes more planning than a new kitchen inside it, and we plan that way. Westhaven and several other planned neighborhoods also have architectural guidelines and active associations. Inside the house, older Franklin homes have out-of-square walls and settled floors that need careful scribing, while newer ones are square but full of builder-grade material that has to be removed cleanly before the new cabinetry goes in.

Franklin questions

Every question we get

Do you work on historic homes in downtown Franklin?

Yes. Houses near Main Street and the historic district are a good fit for cabinetry built to the room rather than to a standard box. We measure the actual walls, design inset or beaded-frame cabinetry in proportion to the existing trim and ceiling height, and install with careful scribing so it reads as original.

Can you replace the builder cabinets in a McKay's Mill or Fieldstone Farms kitchen in Franklin?

Yes. That is one of the most natural Franklin projects: removing 1990s or 2000s cabinetry, a raised bar and a corner pantry, then rebuilding the kitchen with a flat island, cabinetry to the ceiling and a properly organized pantry. Plumbing and electrical usually stay close to where they are, which keeps the project contained.

Do you install custom closets and pantries in Westhaven and Berry Farms homes in Franklin?

Yes. Newer Franklin houses usually come with generous closet and pantry rooms finished with wire or melamine shelving. We replace that with built-in hanging, drawers, shelving and counter space made in our shop and finished to suit the house, and we can do the same for a mudroom, laundry room or home office.
