Hendersonville is the largest city in Sumner County, about twenty-five minutes northeast of downtown Nashville by I-65 and Vietnam Veterans Boulevard, and Old Hickory Lake defines it: twenty-six miles of shoreline, with about half the city sitting on the Indian Lake and Walton Ferry peninsulas that reach into the water. The lake houses along Walton Ferry Road, Sanders Ferry Road and the Indian Lake peninsula date mostly from the 1960s through the 1980s, ranches and two-story brick houses turned toward the water with private docks. Inland, Mansker Farms and Millstone brought planned neighborhoods, and Durham Farms is the newest.

Lakefront owners commission kitchens and living rooms that face the view, with cabinetry that stays low under the windows and a media wall that does not compete with the lake. Owners in the newer neighborhoods commission closets, pantries, mudrooms and home offices, the rooms a builder frames but does not finish.

What do Hendersonville homeowners usually ask us for?

Lake-house kitchens. A 1970s house on the Indian Lake or Walton Ferry peninsula usually has its kitchen at the back, away from the water, with a wall between it and the room that has the view. The request is to open that wall, run the cabinetry along the sides so the sightline stays clear, set an island where the family gathers and give the lake side of the room low cabinetry under the windows rather than uppers. Finishes lean toward warm woods that hold up to a house full of wet towels.

Second is the primary suite in those same houses, where the bathroom and closets were sized for 1975. Owners combine two small closets into a dressing room, rebuild the vanity as furniture and add a linen tower. In Durham Farms, Mansker Farms and Millstone, the requests are the ones newer houses always generate: a pantry with cabinetry, closet systems with drawers, a mudroom with lockers for lake gear and a home office.

What is different about working on a home in Hendersonville?

Lake houses are built for the site, not the plan book, so no two are alike, and many have been added onto more than once. Floors step, ceilings change height and walls are rarely square, which is why we measure the whole space and build to it rather than to nominal dimensions. Humidity near the water argues for finishes and hardware chosen with that in mind. Permits run through the City of Hendersonville, and waterfront properties can involve additional rules for anything near the shoreline, though interior cabinetry is unaffected.

Hendersonville questions

Every question we get

Can you remodel the kitchen in a lakefront home in Hendersonville?

Yes. Lake houses in Hendersonville are often 1960s to 1980s builds with the kitchen closed off from the water side. The typical remodel opens that wall, keeps cabinetry low on the lake side to protect the view and builds an island where the family gathers. We measure the actual room, since lake houses are rarely square.

Do you work in newer Hendersonville neighborhoods like Durham Farms and Mansker Farms?

Yes. The newer houses in Durham Farms, Mansker Farms and Millstone tend to have large closets, pantries and mudrooms finished only with wire shelving. We replace that with built-in cabinetry, drawers and hanging sections made in our shop, and we build home offices and media walls for the bonus rooms and family rooms.

Does a Hendersonville kitchen or bath remodel need a permit?

Cabinetry and countertop work alone generally does not. Moving walls, plumbing or electrical does, and those permits come from the City of Hendersonville. Waterfront lots can carry additional rules for work near the shoreline, but interior cabinetry, closets and pantries are not affected. We identify what applies to your project before it starts.
