A built-in home office turns a spare bedroom, a landing or a formal dining room nobody uses into a place where work gets done and then put away. We build the desk at the right height for how you sit, size the drawers to letter files and printer paper, hide the cables in a chase behind the monitors, and finish it as furniture that belongs to the house rather than something that arrived in a box.
What does a built-in home office include?
The desk comes first, because it is the piece you will sit at for hours. We build it to the height that suits how you sit, usually a little lower than a kitchen counter and a little higher than a dining table, and deep enough for a monitor arm and a keyboard with room to spare. Below it go file drawers sized for letter or legal folders, a pull-out for the printer, and a drawer with power inside so phones and laptops charge out of sight.
Above and beside it, the office becomes a wall: open shelves for the books and objects you want to see, closed uppers for the supplies you do not, and task lighting under the cabinets so your face is lit for video calls and your eyes are not strained. A single wall handles most offices; a two-person layout or a full library wall with a ladder takes more of the room. We build the whole thing in our shop and install it as furniture.
What affects the cost of a custom home office?
How much wall the office takes, what it is built from, and what goes inside it. A single desk run with drawers and a few uppers is a modest project. A floor-to-ceiling wall with a two-person desk, glass-door display cabinets, a library ladder and lit shelving is a larger one. Wood species and finish matter: painted maple sits at one end, stained rift white oak or walnut at the other, and inset doors take more shop time than overlay.
Electrical is the other variable. Most offices need more outlets than the room has, a data line where the router is not, and switched lighting under the uppers. That is licensed electrical work, and we plan it into the cabinetry so the wires disappear. We do not publish price ranges because a closet office and a library wall are not the same job. How long does a built-in home office take?
The build happens in our shop, which is where most of the time goes. After design and selections are approved, the desk, drawers and shelving are built, finished and fitted together before they leave, so the installation in your home is measured in days rather than weeks. Countertops in quartz or stone are templated after the cabinetry is set, and we schedule the fabrication so it does not hold up the finish.
The sequence on site is electrical first, then the cabinetry, then the top, then lighting, trim and hardware. If the office is in a room you are working from now, we plan the install so your desk is down for as short a stretch as possible, and we can often stage the work so you keep a surface to use. We protect floors, seal the doorway and clean up at the end of each day.
What makes a home office work day after day?
Ergonomics before aesthetics. The desk height, the depth for a monitor at the right distance, knee space that clears a chair with arms, and a keyboard height that does not lift your shoulders. Then cable management: a chase behind the monitors, grommets where the cords drop, a power strip inside the desk, and a place for the docking station that is not the floor. An office that looks good in a rendering and hurts by Thursday has failed.
Then the room itself. In an older home in Green Hills or Belle Meade that often means working with plaster walls and a window that is not centered, and matching the existing trim. In a new build in Spring Hill or Mt. Juliet it usually means giving a plain flex room some real millwork and a wall that looks composed on camera. Either way, we design it in 3D first so you see what it becomes before we build it.

How long does a built-in home office take?

What is the best desk for a home office?
One built to your height and your work. A built-in desk is set to the height that suits how you sit, is deep enough for a monitor arm, hides the cables in a chase, and has drawers sized to what you actually file. A freestanding desk compromises on all four counts. Sit-stand inserts can be built into the run if you want to alternate.
Can you put a home office in a closet or a spare bedroom?
Yes, and both are common. A walk-in or reach-in closet takes a desk, uppers and lighting and closes behind its doors at the end of the day. A spare bedroom can hold an office on one wall and a guest bed on another, or a wall bed that folds down over the desk. We measure what is there and design to the space you have.
How do you hide computer cables in a built-in desk?
With a chase behind the desk and monitors, grommets where the cords drop through the top, a power strip mounted inside the desk, and a drawer with an outlet for charging phones and laptops. Data and power are brought to the desk by a licensed electrician before the cabinetry goes in, so nothing runs along the baseboard afterward.
Does a built-in home office add value to a house?
A dedicated, well-built office is something buyers in Middle Tennessee now ask about, and built-in millwork reads as part of the house rather than furniture that leaves with the seller. We cannot promise an appraisal figure. What we can say is that a built-in desk, storage wall and lighting done properly are the kind of upgrade that shows well and holds up.
